SSDC battery storage business fails to generate profit

SSDC battery storage business fails to generate profit

Aug 8, 2019

The company that runs a renewable energy business in partnership with South Somerset District Council made a loss last year of £200,000.

SSDC invested £9.8 million in setting-up the battery storage venture - Opium Power Ltd. It was designed to earn the Council money for front-line services by storing electricity and selling it back to the National Grid during periods of peak demand.

SSDC – who own 50 percent of the company – say they expect it to return to profit once the storage facility on the outskirts of Taunton becomes fully operational.
