Lib Dems smash Conservatives in Local Elections

Lib Dems smash Conservatives in Local Elections

May 7, 2019

The leader of South Somerset District Council has described the Liberal Democrats' performance at the local elections as a "stunning victory".

The Lib Dems gained 11 seats as they smashed the Conservatives, who lost nine seats.

After the result was revealed, Council Leader Val Keitch, who retained her Ilminster seat, thanked Liberal Democrat voters, councillors and campaigners.

She said: "It was a stunning victory!"

"We expected to win, but not by that kind of margin.

"This is all down to the massive amount of work that our committed members have been doing in the local area.

"Thank you to all the voters who came out for us, I think they have spoken from the ballot box."

The leader of the council believes the current situation with national politics and Brexit has played a role in the local election, but says that the Liberal Democrats have been doing "fantastic" work in the district.

She said: "It would be silly to think what is happening nationally hasn't affected this result, it has definitely tarnished parties.

"However, the Lib Dems locally have been doing a fantastic job."

The make-up of South Somerset District Council now stands at:

Liberal Democrats - 41 seats
Conservatives - 15 seats
Independents - 5 seats

The Liberal Democrats have a majority within the council and Councillor Keitch said they can now begin to implement big projects across the district.

She said: "We can now really push forward with three planned regeneration projects in the district - in Yeovil, Chard and Wincanton.

"They will now be delivered and they will get done.

"We have a new green agenda, and we will now examine that in detail because that is very important to the Liberal Democrats.

"The council is in a very good state financially, and we will hope to continue that for the next four years."
